Cockshutt 770 tracktor and the history behind the trackter supply factory, presented to you by Bohin Farm Equipment tracktors.

Cockshutt 770 tracktor

James G. Cockshutt started his business under the name Brantford Plow Works in 1877. Within a few years, it was changed to the Cockshutt Plow Company which became very successful within the tillage tools segment of farm equipment just before the depression.

Cockshutt and Alis Chalmers

They soon started to sell Alis Chalmers and United tracktors but soon went over to Oliver Hart Parr models instead focusing on the very popular Oliver 60-70 models. They were either sold in the famous Oliver green (wheels red and the grille in yellow) or in the Cockshutt red with cream grille and wheels.

The Oliver-made Cockshutt tractors were selling well during the 1940's and in 1946 they launched their own model 30 with the new independent PTO. There were more models to follow, the 40, 20 and 50 came out (the PTO was standard on the 40 and 50 but optional on the 20).

The Cockshutt 30 to 50 models used Buda engines. Buda Engine Company was later bought by Alis Chalmers in the early 50's which forced Cockshut to change the engines to Perkins, Hercules and Continental.

One of the collectors items in great demand today is the Golden Arrow, built in 1957 as a show tractor in very small numbers only. The idea was to show the new ideas of the soon-to-come 540 and 550 models. The Golden Arrow models were planned to be sent back to Brantford and upgraded to become full new 550 models but a few of these disappeared elsewhere and are now rarities.

The company was later bought up by the Oliver Corporation (1962).

Cockshutt tractors - prices of used trackters

For a rough idea on the current pricing of these machines, the list below shows some recent sales of the post war Cockshutt's.

The Cockshutt 770 tracktor model

The Cockshutt 770 tractor was one of the types of the 1960's. There was also an industrial version of the 770 and for the industry there was also the choice of a crawler line. The 770 had a Fiat engine and got a facelift with a new checkered grillle and the top fenders became flat - the new design bought another few years of this model.
