The 950B is a real work horse that replaced the 950 model of the 1970's. A well maintained B model from the 1980's can be a very good buy. Caterpillar (CAT) history
It all started in the latter half of the 19th century. The partners Benjamin Holt and Danel Best tried to improve on the current steam tractors that got problems in soggy soil when they got bigger. Once they got stuck in the mud, they were difficult to pull out again. The cracking idea came in late 1904 or early 1905 when Holt added wooden blocks tread-linked around the idlers. Results from the experiment were very convincing and this lead to the development of the Caterpillar 30.The company itself was incorporated in 1925 via merger of Holt's and Best's companies, into the new Caterpillar Tractor Co.
Caterpillar of today is a multi-national company with products from track-style trectors to excavators, backhoe loaders, wheelloaders, agricultural farm tractors and turbines. It was the original Cat tracktor which led to the creation of military tanks.
