Tractors - (farm tracktors) what are they?
The name itself stems from the latin word trahere (pull). Another explanation offered is that they were first called traction engines, later traction motor engines and when that became a bit too long, it was contracted into the modern word.
The history starts in the early 1800's when the first mechanical farm machinery was invented and later towards the beginning of the 1900's when they became steam powered. The steam engine tracktors were not exactly what you would call safe - they would sometimes explode or there could be bad drive belt accidents. The first gasoline (petrol) driven tractor was built by an American, John Froelich in Iowa. These farmtractors started to be very popular after around 1910 when they became more reliable and affordable.
